Surrounded by pristine indigenous forests, dams, mountain bike trails, this is comfortable camping without the tent in a large wooden barn-like structure, which covers the ruins of an historic woodcutters’ cottage. Slide the wooden doors wide open and you’ll be under a roof while being immersed in nature. Perfect for birders and bikers, large school groups or even a family weekend away. The road access is a farm track and although sedans frequently make it, 4x4’s or bakkies are ideal.
We often have school groups or tour use the Bush Camp. If they arrive by bus we load all guests and luggage into our Landcruiser, the Old Lady, and our farm bakkies, and we drive guests down and back up.
The water in all our cottages comes straight off the mountain. It is a golden, clear amber colour and is completely safe and drinkable. The colour comes from the tannins that seep from roots as the water is naturally filtered underground before trickling into the rock pools high up on the mountainside. It has a high Ph level and a bit of a taste so we don’t think it makes a great Japanese sencha or even a heavenly cup of strong English tea so we suggest you bring bottled water if you are concerned, pregnant or have a sensitive and highly attuned sense of taste. But what we can promise is it is phenomenal to bath, shower or swim in.
We ask all our guests to please shut the windows, shutters and doors when they leave even if only for a quick walk. We have baboons who love bananas and will climb in through an open window for breadcrumbs if they get half the chance.
